Do you take pictures of people? Yes? Then this tip is for you!
When photographing a person or group of people, move in close – either with your zoom lens or with your feet. Unless you are doing a fashion shoot or really want to see what people are wearing, the face is the place to focus on.
I took these pictures, just snapshots really, yesterday while visiting with relatives in Phoenix.
Sure, it’s a nice picture of my mom and my aunt and uncle, but notice all the stuff around them: the umbrellas in the background the purses on the side. The real stars of the picture are the people, so I just moved in a bit closer.
We’ve taken out most of the umbrellas and the purses are gone. My mom is probably happier with this shot as it hides a bit of her full figure. And, you really get to see their faces better. (I love my aunt and uncle. They let me live with them for a while when I was younger and they still like me. Amazing!)
Here’s another of my cousin, Bob and his wife.
Far away…
And closer! (That Bob is such a goofball!)
If you are taking a picture of somebody and want to get an interesting background item too, then of course, you wouldn’t come in so close, but by and large, people pictures are better when you move in close.
Ok, just one more to prove my point. Here is my cousin’s son, Ethan. Cutie pie!
