To celebrate the Presidents’ Day holiday, we decided to do something as a family. Our choice? A bit of exercise and some detective work. We went geocaching! Our choice was to head down to Upper Bidwell Park in Chico hike the ridge around Horseshoe Lake and Monkey Face.
We took Frank and Jane, but kind of wished we hadn’t. There were dogs galore – and all big ones. Not a great place for Frank, and Jane followed his example.

They spent some time yipping and yapping at every dog that went by on the trail. Not a pleasant experience, to be sure, but we learned to steer clear of other animals and things got better.
Geocaching uses the GPS technology to locate caches, or hidden treasures, that others leave behind. We use a simple little Garmin GPS device, punch in the coordinates taken from a site on the internet, and then follow the arrow. The tricky part is finding the cache when you get there. Some are as small as a film canister. Some, like one of the ones we found today, look like a rock, but are follow inside. If large enough, a cache will hold small items that finders leave behind. You can take an item and leave one of your own, or just sign the small list inside with your name and date of the find.

Upper Bidwell Park has some fabulous views! If you come for a visit, we’ll take you there. You can hold the dog leash!

Brook Lowther - That looks like so much fun. The pics are beautiful and I completely sympathize about the weiner dog vs. any other dog problem. Been there, done that.
