Sports Photography – Looking Forward to Spring

As I mentioned in the last post, I freelance for Legends American Youth Photo, a youth sports photography company.  In the youth sports photography business, they start early to get business for the next season.  Between now and the end of the year, Legends AYP will send out several mass marketing mailers, make hundreds of phone calls, and, if we’re all lucky, make several presentations for league boards.  This assures us a larger piece of the pie come Little League season.  And it has to be done this way every year because league boards change leadership.

Here is the latest promotion:

A Nice Thank You from My Special Friends at Juniper School

I freelance for Legends American Youth Photo taking sports and preschool photos during the fall and spring season.  Last month, I took pictures at Juniper Preschool in Redding.  My favorite photos were those of my very special friends in Anne’s class.  They did such a good job!  When we delivered the photos, we received this personalized thank you from them.

Ben’s Color Blast

My favorite actions come from Jodi at MCP Actions.  Love them!  Thought I would try a bit of a color blast on Ben’s brick wall.  Whoa!  Look at that!  Someone has spray painted some lovely grafitti on the wall.  How convenient that it says “Ben” and the year he is graduating.  I love it when you find just the right place to take a picture!

More Fun Pics from the Chef’s Special Senior Photo Shoot

One of the great things about doing a group shoot is that the people play off of each other, making each other laugh and allowing the real personality to shine through.  I’ll be sharing a few other fun pics in the next few days.

Fun at the Chef’s Special Senior Shoot in Chico

Four seniors attended the first Chef’s Special Senior Shoot this afternoon.  We met at Bidwell Mansion on the CSU Chico campus and had fun discovering great places for pictures all over.  Afterwards, we ate delicious pizza at Celestino’s.  Everyone seemed to have a good time and we got some awesome shots.

A few outtakes for your viewing pleasure:

Playing with My New Toy

I got the new Nikon D90 yesterday and I couldn’t be happier! I still haven’t figured out all the new settings, but what I see, I really like. The HD video feature is cool! Not something I will use all the time, but a fun extra. I am really pleased with the sharpness of the kit lens, AF-S Nikkor 18-105mm 3.5-5.6 ED with vibration reduction. Here’s a sample shot in my dining room in front of the curtain. Even with just the on camera flash, you get a decent picture. I can’t wait to use this at my Senior Photo Shoot next Saturday.

Here is a quick sample of the video.

Wahoo! My new camera is here! My new camera is here!

It finally arrived! My new Nikon D90 DSLR. It’s the latest pro-sumer level DLSR from Nikon. Here are the specs:

  • 12.3-megapixel DX-format CMOS imaging sensor: Coupled with Nikon’s EXPEED image processing technologies and NIKKOR optics, breathtaking image fidelity is assured. (Better than my D80, and I really loved that camera!)
  • Continuous shooting as fast as 4.5 frames-per-second: Combined with fast 0.15ms power-up and split-second 65ms shooting lag, dramatic action and decisive moments are captured easily.
  • D-Movie Mode—Cinematic 24fps HD with sound: Record cinematic-quality movie clips at up to 720p HD (1280 x 720 pixels) in Motion JPEG format, enhanced by NIKKOR interchangeable lens quality and versatility. (Ok, this is a way-cool bonus feature. Probably won’t use it much for work, but it’s great fun for the family!)
  • Low noise ISO sensitivity from 200 to 3200: High signal-to-noise components and design deliver exceptional performance, even at high ISO setting. (Yes!)
  • 3-inch super-density 920,000-dot color LCD monitor: High resolution, 170-degree wide-angle viewing guarantees confident image review and movie playback. (Double Yes!)
  • Built-in image sensor cleaning: Effective 4-frequency, ultrasonic sensor cleaning frees image degrading dust particles from the sensor’s optical low pass filter.(No way! This too!??)
  • 11-point AF system with Face Priority: Consistently fast and accurate autofocus, reinforced by the Nikon Scene Recognition System, delivers razor sharpness in a wide variety of conditions. (Yup! That’s what I’m taking about!)
  • One-button Live View: Easy to use Live View activates access to 3 contrast detection focus modes including Face Priority AF.
  • Nikon 3D Color Matrix Metering II with Scene Recognition System: Nikon’s renowned 420-pixel RGB 3D Color Matrix Metering II, teamed with the exclusive Scene Recognition System, evaluates images, referencing an on-board database of over 30,000 photographic scenes, for unmatched exposure accuracy.
  • Comprehensive exposure control: Five advanced scene modes plus Program Auto, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Manual.
  • Auto Active D-Lighting: Selectable and Automatic, Active D-Lighting optimizes details within shadows and highlights, taming high-contrast situations in real time. (Very helpful!)
  • Durable, high precision shutter: Testing to over 100,000 cycles assures shutter life and accuracy.
  • In-Camera Image Editing: Creative freedom stems from exclusive in-camera image editing, featuring Fisheye effect, Straighten and Distortion Control as well as D-Lighting, Red-eye Reduction, Image Overlay, Monochrome and more. (Since I have Photoshop, I don’t use this much, but’s it’s nice to know its there anyway)
  • GPS geo-tagging: GP-1 GPS unit (optional) provides automatic real-time geo-tagging. (Not sure why you would need this. Any ideas?)

In the kit, it comes with the new AF-S Nikkor 18-105mm 3.5-5.6G ED VR. I’ve been wanting a vibration reduction lens for a while now and this one gives me great, sharp photos. I’ve been playing around with it since it came yesterday and will post a few pictures tomorrow. I can’t wait to use it for the Chef’s Special Senior Photo Shoot on October 11. BTW, I still have two spots open if there are any high school seniors interested. Click on Latest Chef Special on the top of the page for more information.

MCP’s New Magic Blog-it Board Action

I am a big fan of MCP Actions. No wait, I am a really, big fan of MCP Actions! So when Jodi from MCP Actions announced a new Photoshop Action was coming soon, I waited with much impatience and excitement. Yesterday, the first day you could purchase her new action, I was online with credit card in hand. This action is a little different than her photo enhancing actions. This action automatically creates picture boards for your websites and blogs (or whatever you want to use them for). Here’s the description straight from her blog:

“Magic Blog It Boards will change the way you prepare and display photos on the web.

The MCP “Magic Blog It Board” photoshop actions create collages and display boards with between 2 and 16 openings. The actions insert photos for you and will drastically reduce the time you spend preparing collages, templates, and storyboards for your blog and site.”

And she’s right! I love this set of actions! It’s easy and fun! You should get them too! Just go to MCP Actions

It’s Amazing!

Earlier today, I was working on my black and white shooting techniques and convinced E that he should be my model. After about 20 shots of him frowing at me, I finally started to get some I could work with. As I was editing in Photoshop, I noticed that the picture I had chosen reminded me another one I had seen recently. All of a sudden it dawned on me that the picture it reminded me of was one I see everyday in my bedroom – it is a picture of my husband’s father! And just as quickly as I realized who he reminded me of, I knew I had to do something to bring these two photos together. This is dedicated to Grandma Pat. We love you!

Becker and B&W

Spent the morning on Becker’s [b] school site catching up on missed lessons. Gotta love his style!

Don’t know how I missed it, but a while back he did a short on black and white photography and how he likes to shoot in black and white as opposed to changing a color photo to b&w in post production. He says one of the reasons it because it saves time. I used to shoot b&w film, but really never thought about shooting digital that way.

So, always one to want to try out something right away, I convinced the E-man to sit for a few shots. I got about 4 really good ones out of 30 or so. He likes to act silly. I always think he looks best a little serious – although his smile really lights up the room.

Shot outside in shade (on our back deck) Nikon D80, AF-S Nikkor 18-135mm lens, f5.6, 1/125, ISO 800, focal length about 95mm
In Photoshop:

  • Adjusted levels – a bit underexposed
  • Used Spot Healing Brush to clear up some acne
  • Used CPM Action “Powder Your Nose” to take a bit of shine off the forehead and nose
  • Used CPM Action “Sharp as a Tack” to sharpen eyes and a bit of the hair highlights
  • Added CPM Action “A Touch of Light” to light side of face .

I played around a bit with some of Jodi’s B&W filter actions, but I like just plain ole black and white best.
